You and I

ignore the scribbling of an unnamed toddler of the past

I was given this Bible* at the end of fall semester my sophomore year in college.
My Bible study leader gave me this Bible as a parting gift before I left

to spend spring semester in Denmark.

Her inscription along with the scripture below created deep affection for the book of Joshua .

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;
meditate on it day and night,
so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and successful.

During my 6 months abroad, there were many time when I realized my deep

need to meditate on the Book and to keep its words tightly enclosed around

my days and my heart.

This past week, I poured over Joshua 1:5.

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life.
As I was with Moses,
so I will be with you;
I will never leave you nor forsake you.

This was one of the promises the Lord spoke to Joshua.

One of many promises.

A promise that we can each easily borrow and hug tightly to our chests.

In this one verse, the pronouns you and I blanket the passage.

From the beginning of time, it has all been about you and I.

God’s laser sharp focus has been on you and me.

How often in contrast my focus is on me and other stuff.

Because of this deeply set heart of God’s on us;

nothing or no one will be able to stand against us

today,

tomorrow or

for the rest of our days.

NO ONE.

It may feel as thought other factors are getting

the upper hand but in God’s mind, packaged within his purposes,

no one will stand against you.

As God was with Moses,

Abraham,

Jacob,

David,

Job,

Jonah,

Esther,

Ruth,

Mary,

Joseph (Old and New Testament),

Peter

and countless others,

He has been and will be with you.

Despite anyone else’s actions,

He will never leave you.

He will never forsake you.

The God of the universe has been with and for you

every even and odd-numbered day of your life.

Keep his word on your lips so you can recount

and recall his promises to you.

Gather up his word and behold the exquisite

beauty of his carefully appointed bouquet delivered

just for you.

Wherever you travel in the length and breadth of His Word,

you will uncover the never-ending story of you and I.

Joshua is one of my favorite Bible characters over many years.

He was one of a handful who lived through years as prisoners/servants in Egypt, escape, desert years, a spy and led people into the Promised Land.  What an amazing visual picture of faith, strength and reliance on God of the galaxies every day.  It all counts, not just a day here or there when I’m cleaned up and looking spiffy or am agreeable to work in the mission fields.

Honed in on God of our days and our nights comments.  As I am feeling Through grief and pain, God is there 24 hours, every day and every night, to hear cries of my soul, offer wisdom and courage, determination to finish the task at hand, moving to life in Paradise.  It is the desire of a united heart you reminded me.  My brain may be in a mental fog of grief or pain, but my heart choices are built on God’s law by the Holy Spirit there.  I am created for loving God and others.

Beautiful Helen. I, too, love the book of Joshua and as I have shared with you, one of my banner verses, that I have taught Micah and Isaac, is Joshua 1:9. He is with us wherever ever we go…no matter what. So comforting.
