flashbacks day one…

flashbacks day one…

This week…I am posting some pieces from years past…ones that didn’t have any comments and perhaps were not read…hopefully each one will encourage you and get me out of my writing dry time as well!

As the autumn leaves are swirling about…there are always so many lessons learned from trees!  This post was title Tree or Shrub?

One doesn’t have to read the newspaper to know that this country is feeling a mighty economic pinch…just take a trip to the grocery store or the gas pump and it can be discouraging.

Today I read this passage in Jeremiah…and it reminded me that I can’t put any of my trust in the stock market or politicians or anything apart from the Lord!

Thus says the LORD:

“ Cursed is the man who trusts in man
      And makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the LORD.
For he shall be like a shrub in the desert,
And shall not see when good comes,
But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness,
In a salt land which is not inhabited.
“ Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
And whose hope is the LORD.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
      And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

Jeremiah 17: 5-8 (NKJV)

Do you want to be this…

Or this…

Jeremiah tells us that if we trust in man or our own flesh as our strength that we will be like a shrub in the desert…we will possess a heart that has departed from the Lord…and we will not see the good that is to come.  In fact, the picture above of the shrub is actually much more appealing and lush than the reality that Jeremiah warns…the Message uses the word “tumbleweed” in place of shrub.  A shrub is a low growing plant and in many cases it is a dwarf variety.

Trust in man or self…become a person whose growth is stunted and low to the ground…a ground that is parched and void of refreshment…always thirsting…never satisfied.

In contrast, trust…rely…depend on…put your hope in the Lord and you will be like a tree…a tree that is planted by the water…whose roots spread out…with beautiful green leaves….a tree that has no worries about drought…lack…economic crisis…BUT will not cease to bear fruit.

Be a tree…one that receives its source of stability from the Lord…with branches that reach upward and outward to others…providing shade and comfort from the storms of life…

Be a tree in your home…in your neighborhood…at the pump…in the check out line…in your world…

Be different than the multitude that are being pressed down by panic…

Be a tree sticking out in the midst of a shrub covered landscape!

“I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind.
Even to give every man
according to his ways.
According to the fruit of his doings.”

Jeremiah 17: 10
