*Better* + Addendum…

cover-to-cover

Wow…how did we get to the end of the year…even more amazing to me is the “end” of Cover to Cover…seriously, I don’t know how to do a final post…in fact, the readings still go until Wednesday.  I think I will just do a couple of posts over the next day or so that will  help me to tie the final bow.  This week’s readings were in Hebrews, I, II and III John and Revelation.

Each week in Caleb’s pre-K class there are what have come to be known as “special words” of the week.  Usually there are 4-5 words and they are sought out during the week…in books, in their art projects, during circle time…

I thought about those special words this past week as I read Hebrews.  As a side note, if there was ever a case that needed to be made about the importance of studying the Old Testament, the book of Hebrews makes it…which brings me to my special word of the week:

Better:  (adj.) comparative of good

  • more attractive, favorable, commendable
  • more advantageous or effective
  • improved in accuracy or performance
  • more useful, serviceable
  • more excellent

Before Christ came to the earth…there was a way…but it was not The Way…there was a way…it was good because it was God’s way…but when He sent Christ…it became a better way.

In Christ we have…

A better hope…

“The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless  (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.”

Hebrews 7: 18-19

A better covenant…

“Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.”

Hebrews 7: 22

A better sacrifice…

“By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.”

Hebrews 11: 4a

A better country…

“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”

Hebrews 11: 13-16

A better resurrection…

“Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.’

Hebrews 11: 35

Something better…

“These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.”

Hebrews 11: 39-40

If we fix our eyes on magazine covers, commercials or billboards, it is easy to want more…to think that our clothes will be cleaner with a new and improved detergent because it is better…why make due with that old car when you can have a new shiny one because it is better…and that popcorn that we love to munch one while watching movies…well there is a new formula that pops more kernels…it is better.  I know these examples are quite trivial.

Everything that we can think or imagine or even envision is better when seen through the Savior.  Better!  In fact this is the encouragement that Hebrews gives us…

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Hebrews 12: 1-3

Jesus is the better way…always has been and always will be!

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Hebrews 13: 8

Please check out Bev’s blog for more on what lingered with her and others this past week.

Addendum:

After I pressed publish last night, I found myself wanting to be “finished” so although I still have a few chapters of Revelation left to consume…I wanted this to be the final post for Cover to Cover.

Now I will recap the book of Revelation….just kidding…

What I did find in my reading of Revelation was Jesus…I found that as I read, I wrote any name of Christ on the top of each page.  That is what reading the Bible through this year has meant…seeing the name of Jesus atop each page…Caleb has a Bible that I love because every story ends with the truth that it all points to Jesus…so just like above…Boaz was Ruth’s kinsman redeemer but Jesus was a better one…Jonah was told to tell a message but Jesus was the better Message…David was a shepherd and a king but Jesus was a better shepherd and the King of Kings.

So I leave you with just a sampling of the Names found in Revelation…and with a huge thank you for Bev in coming up with this idea to join forces in reading the Word chronologically this past year…I know I am not alone in saying that it has impacted my life in such a powerful way and been such a wonderful surprise to meet so many that are seeking a better way just like me…thanks for all the comments and especially reading some of those really long posts…

  3. Helen, I’ve been sick and away from all computer life for a week, so I’m late in saying farewell. Snow is falling all over your computer screen or am I seeing spots?? I’m really sick, you know. I’d like to think it’s SNOW —saw real snow fall for first time in eons this past week. Just had to come by to say that you are a beautiful gifted writer and your tongue is the pen of a ready writer!!! I’ve said it before. You’ve meant a lot to me on this journey and your words have sunk deep in me. Thank you for your faithfulness and passion. You have a beautiful heart and hand! Love, Bev
