“In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the year Evil-Merodach became king of Babylon, he released Jehoiachin from prison on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table. Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived.”
II Kings 25: 27-30
I read the following passage this week and it is repeated again in Jeremiah 52: 31-34. The visual in these verses has not left me…
Jehoiachin was 18 years old when he became the king of Judah and he ruled only 3months and he did evil in the sight of the Lord as so many kings had done before him…then he was taken into captivity. As I have searched for more about Jehoiachin, I haven’t found a great deal from when he was taken into captivity until he was released from prison…but we do know that he was 18 when he began a prisoner’s life and 55 when he was left his cell.
It was part of God’s plan for Jehoiachin to be released (Jer. 28: 4)…it is also a part of God’s plan for us to be free as well.
This week, I put myself in Jehoiachin’s shoes…
Have I been rebellious? Yes.
Have I done evil in the sight of God? Yes.
Do I deserve to be sent away? Yes.
As a follower of Jesus Christ, the King speaks kindly to me… He gave me a seat of honor…told me to take off those prison clothes and come sit at His table…the King’s table…He has said that I can have a place at His table for the rest of my days…and then some! While I wait for that eternal Table…He gives me a regular allowance…some would say manna…others might joyously shout of new mercies or grace…still others would whisper in awe of His indwelling Holy Spirit and each would be right.
Rejoice today that you have a place at His table…in brand new clothes…and with “money” to spare…that is the example of God’s extravagant love for us…He just lavishes us…
I may not be able to pronounce Jehoiachin’s name correctly but I sure do know how to say the word grace and the name of Jesus!
Thankful that I can burn my prison clothes,
