Hunger: to crave food; any craving or strong desire
If you didn’t look at the calendar, it might be easy to determine what time of year it is…we are approaching a new year…a time for a fresh start perhaps…the perennial time for resolutions. One glance at store magazine racks reveals headlines that proclaim that this will be THE YEAR where all your dreams will come true…especially if those dreams pertain to losing weight and getting in better physical shape.
I will admit that I have made so many different resolutions and have kept very few of them…possibly it is too much pressure to succeed where so many have failed before.
A cover of a magazine displayed a heading that caused me to rethink the whole resolution dilemma in general:
LOSE 15 LBS. FAST!!!! WITHOUT FEELING HUNGRY…EVER!
Although I would love to lose any amount of weight fast…there is that dreaded fact that when food intake is reduced, hunger tends to increase and increase with each passing smaller meal.
God created hunger for a reason…to alert us to when we need to refuel our bodies with sustenance. Hunger is not a bad thing…it is necessary…although at times it may feel like a necessary evil.
This year, I resolve to satisfy my hunger not just in the physical realm but in the spiritual realm as well. God does tell us to not be overindulgent but to eat when we have need. The Word shows us that He provides for our physical needs as well as our spiritual ones. How merciful would God be to only be concerned with our prayer life and not with our need for food?
I resolve to:
Hunger for righteousness
Hunger for justice
Hunger for His presence
Hunger for peace
Hunger for time for with My Maker
Hunger for time with my loved ones
Hunger for holiness
Hunger to see His glory
Hunger for the lost
Hunger for the things of God
In closing, read some scripture related to hunger in the Word some physical, some spiritual and some a combination of both:
“In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock…”
Nehemiah 9: 15a
“…for he satifies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
Psalm 107: 9
“He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,”
Psalm 146: 7
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Matthew 5: 6
“Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
Matthew 15: 32
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6: 35
“And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore,
“they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.
Never again will they hunger;
never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat upon them,
nor any scorching heat.
For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd;
he will lead them to springs of living water.
And God will wipe away every tear form their eyes.”
Revelation 7: 14b-17
Are you hungry yet??
Happy New Year…may the Lord satisfy your heart, mind, body and soul with Himself,
