When I was in elementary school, one of the most highly anticipated rites of passage for 4th graders was twofold…being able to be a cafeteria line server and being a crossing guard for the younger students.
I couldn’t wait to reach the 4th grade and take my turn…it meant that I had possessed enough maturity to be entrusted with serving the proper portions at lunch time but also ensuring the safety of those younger than me, those wee ones that were too small to cross from one side of the street to the other side without assistance.
Sometimes when I write a post, as soon as the piece is birthed, it is set aside…out of my mind and spirit and onto “paper”. However, last week’s Contemplating Bedtime seemed to stick with me throughout this week. I continued to read other scriptures that gave me an even greater sense of peace about how the Father covers and helps us in our weak moments.
There is a scripture that has been marinating in me for some months…II Timothy 1:12:
“That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.”
Webster defines the word “guard” by the following terms:
- watch, take care
- one assigned to protect or oversee another
- a person or body of persons on sentinel duty
- troop attached to the person of the sovereign
- the state of being protected
We have a God that will defend us, watch over us, take care of us, is assigned to protect and oversee us. As well as attaching His troops (angels) to us because we belong to Him. Anything in regards to our lives if we entrust it to God, He will guard it…and I am inclined to believe that He guards those things pertaining to His children irregardless of our relinquishing them, because He is altogether good and for our good.
I love how the Message describes God as our Guardian!
“I look up to the mountains;
does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
who made the heaven, and earth and mountains.
He won’t let you stumble,
your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life! Israel’s
Guardian God will never doze or sleep.
God’s your Guardian,
right at your side to protect you–
Shielding you from sunstroke,
sheltering you from moonstroke.
God guards you from every evil,
he guards your very life.
He guards you when you leave and when you return,
he guards you now, he guards you always.”
Last week, I wrote about not being able to sleep…but I need to remember that God never sleeps…He is always watching me and lingering over me. That is too wonderful to know! He is attentive and alert to my fitful sleep and to my cries for help. By definition, I am in the state of being protected…it is continual. He is guarding every aspect of my life. He is protecting me from evil…in fact He is at my right side. As a believer, when I lift up my shield of faith it is in my left hand. For further protection, I need the Lord to be on my right side. He thinks of everything doesn’t He?! He guards my comings and going…He protects me from the harshness of daytime and nighttime. He completely guards my life right this very minute and forever!
Remember the opening scripture in Second Timothy, now would be the time to see a full circle moment in action. Keep in mind…we are confident that we can entrust GOD with guarding all things pertaining to us.
“What you have heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you–guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”
II Timothy 1: 13, 14
I repeat…know WHO God is so that you can be completely assured of WHAT He will do…He will guard what you entrust to Him…AND once we really know Him from reading His word, adhering to strong Word centered teaching, we are to guard the deposit that God has entrusted to us. This world wants to tear anyone that belongs to God apart…know what and who you believe so that you can guard it (defend, watch, and take care of it) and share it accurately and authentically. That is full circle entrusting and guarding, isn’t it?!
The more I learn about God, the less I know. Don’t you feel the same? I am still like a first grader, trying not to be impulsive and rush into oncoming traffic but learning to wait for the Ultimate Crossing Guard to walk before me, outstretch His arms, beckoning the approaching danger to cease, and allow me to cross to a safer territory.
Lord, thank You that You have given me everything that I need that pertains to life and godliness through Your Son Jesus. Thank You that I can trust You completely to guard what is important to me and I will guard the priceless treasure that You have imparted to me. I feel blessed that You want to partner with me…thank You that You are always there and that You never slumber nor sleep…You are always at work…Praise You for Your magnificent care and concern about me. I also thank You that You never cease to give me the right portion of meat from Your Word to sustain me and sometimes You surprise me with the tastiest and biggest pieces…sweet sufficiency and love….once again, I am overwhelmed…praise YOU!
