The Movie Buff’s Guide to the Bible

If you have read the essay “Faith…” you will notice that I borrowed a quote from James Bond.  After reading my essay, my instructor gave me the challenge of using movie quotes to explain faith.  This was the result…

The Bible happens to be the Greatest Story Ever Told but why is it often easier to pay 10 dollars at the theater to watch “The Passion of the Christ” than open up the Good Book and check out what’s inside.  It maybe entertaining to watch Charlton Heston portray Moses and part the Red Sea but it is time that we all dusted off our Bibles and find out just how much God’s Word may actually have in common with the famous and familiar words from the big screen.

“Here’s looking at you, kid.” (Casablanca)
“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” ( II Chronicles 16:9)

“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” (The Godfather)
” For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

“May the force be with you.” (Star Wars)
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”
( I Peter 1:3)

“You can’t handle the truth.” (A Few Good Men)
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

“It’s alive! It’s alive!” (Frankenstein)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old is gone, the new has come.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

“Fasten your seatbelts.  It’s going to be a bumpy night.” (All About Eve)
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1,2)

“Well, nobody’s perfect.” (Some Like It Hot)
“As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless.” (Ps. 18:30)

“Nobody puts Baby in the corner. ” (Dirty Dancing)
“You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matthew 5:14,15)

“I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog, too!” (The Wizard of Oz)
“Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8)

“There’s no place like home.” (The Wizard of Oz)
“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)

“I’ll be back!” (The Terminator)
“Behold, I am coming soon!  My reward is with me, and I will give everyone according to what he has done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelations 22: 12,13)

“Made it Ma! Top of the World! ” (White Heat)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
( II Timothy 4:7)

“I’m the king of the world!” (Titanic)
“Now to the King eternal, invisible, the Only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever, Amen.” (I Timothy 1:17)

Movie lines have a way of slipping into our everyday language and cause us to relate to a shared experience.  But no matter how long these movie quotes endure, they will never have the life changing and eternal value that God’s written and spoken Word carries.

“You had me at “hello”…God had us at “In the beginning…”

  1. I loved this, Helen. Thank you for sharing it with me. I love how His Word is appropriate for all seasons, all aspects of our lives. He is so worthy of this praise. Even the best movie quotes can’t outdo our Lord. His Word is Life.
